Water Facts

Increasing water scarcity and diminishing pros- pects for creating new water supplies place attention on increasing the efficiency with which water is used for agricul- tural and municipal uses. Particularly in the United States, it is increasingly difficult to fund large water supply projects or to find locations suitable for such projects. Thus, water management programs are transition- ing from dam-building, drilling, and diverting activities to improving water efficiency, recycl- ing, reuse, and conser- vation activities. Studies are showing that invest- ments in these latter activities often yield more usable water per dollar of investment than tradition- al water supply projects.
